I (honestly) do not understand your point.

And that's part of the problem.

As someone who's spent a couple of decades
on each side of this discussion, I can see both
points of view.  However, the system is there
for the benefit of the applications; the reverse
is not the case.  If the systems guy cannot
understand the application guy's point, that is
a problem.
