The 2 bosses in question recognized that this was time well spent and did not count it towards vacation. This was work, or training, or such. BTW, these were people that had been techies in former lives. They were rare technicians that actually became good managers. They recognized the value of free (for the company) training. They also new from interviews that I value SHARE very much and probably would not stay at the job long if I couldn't regularly attend.
