CA tells me they cannot use a DNS name for the IP connected equipment; that
it has to be a physically coded IP address.

That's ridiculous! Any IP application that wants to be taken seriously
should support a URL in lieu of an IP address. If it's numeric (dotted
quad), use it as-is. Else, invoke GetHostByName. It's a SMOP.

(there's no DNS server on the M/F).

There doesn't need to be. The stack profile includes the IP address
of the DNS server.

That doesn't sound right, Lizette.
Up until a year ago, I supported a CA-Spool environment with about 230
network printers all over the world.
The majority of these printers were assigned DNS names in the CA-Spool
control library.
If someone moved a printer to a new location so that an IP address change
was required, all they had to do was update the (UNIX-) DNS server (there's
no DNS server on the M/F). As soon as the DNS change took effect, mainframe
reports for this printer would automatically print at the new site. Most of
these changes were done at off-hours and using DNS with CA-Spool saved me
many an hour of midnight and weekend support. ;-)
Even if an old printer was replaced with a new model ... that was no
problem, as long as the printer was HP PCL compatible.
Worked great.

Ulrich Krueger

Subject: Print Distribution and IP connected Devices

We will be moving many people over the next few months from one building to
another about 10 miles away. Some will keep their current equipment and
some will get new equipment.

What I am running into is with print (report) distribution.

The network group (not MAINFRAME) cannot tell me the new IP addresses for
this equipment until it is actually plugged in. That means I have to wait
until the customer is ready to work to find out they can no longer receive
print from CA Spool or Dispatch because the old IP address for their
equipment is no longer valid.

Is there any way I can get this under control before the move or am I just
SOL?

CA tells me they cannot use a DNS name for the IP connected equipment; that
it has to be a physically coded IP address.

Any thoughts, suggestions or comments are welcome.

Lizette
