100+ extents for tablespace is not good idea because you can reach the limit. No perceptible performance degradation could be observed however. <end snip> I agree on limit, even if with z/OS 1.7 the limit was greatly increase and in any case there's a procedure that reorganize tablespace when number of extent is high just to avoid (in the past) to hit extent limits. And I agree, we have index of VTOC now (...now, since many years....). Anyway you confirm that VTOC is very slightly involved with extents.
