Nice piece Sam.
I think after all is said and done why are they so "mesmerized" by
web access? The 3270 (which has really met everyones needs for 20+
years) is OK as it is. If they want to stabilize it fine but don't
take something that works adequately away. If you want to offer new
items then make them web only fine .
Simple, no? Unless I am misunderstanding the basic issue. I think IBM
is trying to force everyone into us using the web interface. No one,
IMO should be forced into that situation. The PC WEENIES have taken
over IBM and they (IMO) don't care about the rest of the world just
their new and improved web interface. The UNIX people have taken over
the OE side of z/OS and they are making a giant leap backwards when
it comes to service and documentation. The PC weenies have pretty
well taken over COBOL.
I can just see it now if the PC Weenies ever take over DFSMS or any
other strategic part of z/os . To get a ptf out you will have to
reship the entire product . VSAM found out years ago that doesn't
work well (anyone remember mega PTF tapes?). Currently that is NOT
the case obviously, but the point is it could happen, shudder.
I would suggest that SHARE needs to sit IBM down and rattle a few
cages, in fact invite only executive level types to the meeting, let
them get the brunt of everyones anger and let IBM witness for
themselves dissatisfied users. It is obvious from my prospective that
IBM has pretty much said "screw the users" and it is time the users
answer back. I made a prediction 7 or 8 years ago IBM is in its death
knell its taken a lot longer that I predicted then but the total lack
of sympathy for the user just in IBMLINK alone speaks volumes.
