It's even simpler than that! $$. They simply don't want to have to maintain two interfaces!
I think everyone agrees a web interface is inevitable. Therefore, a "redundant" 3270 interface is optional.
The real problem here has been a *total* lack of sound judgment on IBM's part. They should have simply left the 3270 interface operational until they had a web implementation that proved itself worthy of taking over. Instead, they announced the 3270 interface would "sunset" on September 1, 2001. Laughable! Here it is over six years later and I'm still using the 3270 interface _every day_ while the web interface remains ... err ... um ... problematic.
