3380 and 3390 are still valid for disk. Tape blocksizes can be larger. I still believe that IBM needs to move to FBA. It will take 5 - 10 years but it is ridiculous that the optimal blocksizes for both 3380 and 3390 VSAM make inefficient use of the track if you want the CI to be in page multiples. It is even dumber since the actual spinning DASD is FBA.
This begs the question. Tape, etc are irelevant when it comes to managing DASD blocksizes which is what all the fuss was about. What I'm curious about, is for all the points being raised, how many people actually have 3380 and/or 3390's on the floor. Even the point raised here about inefficient track usage suggests that the originator of the question has a sense of the physical space usage which I suspect isn't true.
