It was the folks at Sine Nomine Associates who did the demo of a prototype or beta version of OpenSolaris, running as a guest under z/VM. They did all of the porting work themselves, without any assistance or support from IBM, as I understand it. I seem to recall, but I may be incorrect on this point, that their port of OpenSolaris will only run as a guest of z/VM, and not on the bare metal in an LPAR.
