>From what I can tell, how goods and/or services is priced is up to the
buyer and seller. If the seller wishes to cast bones, study entrails,
use astrology, or some 'grouping' metric, then they are free to do so.
If the buyer chooses to accept the bones, star charts, or use the
salesperson's height in millimeters instead, then they are free to do
so.

They are proposing a pricing metric. You may accept that or pick a
different metric and make a counter proposal. Iterate until there is
agreement. Like you, I would be reluctant to accept a metric that the
vendor can't explain.

By the way, many shops these days are insisting on usage based metrics
rather than box size. We just had a potential vendor propose a 'MIPS'
pricing metric. We proposed usage based MSU's. There is no agreement as
yet, but the vendor appears to be willing to work with us. So far, so
good.

HTH and good luck.

Subject: CPU groups

Listers,

I have a vendor (who shall remain nameless) telling me that for software
billing purposes our z890 is in Group 110. Well, I can't find any
resource on the web that refers to anything higher than Group 80 -- when
I asked the vendor for their documentation on mainframes and grouping
categories, the answer was that they didn't have one. Hmmm.

I searched the archives, and there was some discussion on the issue of
groups many years ago, but I didn't find anything recently, so I thought
it might be all right to bring up the issue again.

So, can anyone point me to reliable documentation on what machines fall
into what Groups that includes references to Group 110 and Group 120?

TIA,
