Nope, that didn't work, but I was able to get the problem resolved by moving all of the valid vsam stuff from that volume and deleting the VVDS and re-allocating it.
I think there was a problem with the dataset name though because when I printed the VVDS the dataset name was spelled with a blank instead of a period in the second qualifier.
