Not too long ago there was a thread about using apostrophes in JCL around a data set name and circumventing the normal standards we expect for a DSN. With the right parameters, you can now allocate and delete VSAM clusters using just JCL. If this is how it was created, then DISP= (OLD,DELETE),DSN='the.BAD DSNAME' might have worked.
While on the topic of strange ways to use names, I recently found IEBUPDTE will create a PDS member name with mixed case letters as long as the first character is upper case or one of the NLS symbols. I could line select it from ISPF, but failed using some ISPF services, or even a command line 'S Index'.
