I know I make plenty of typos, some of which I catch in the futile
milliseconds between hitting <Send> and watching the flawed note sail down
the pipe. I think most of mine involve omitted words or the lose-loose
mix-up, either of which passes spell check even though it is egregiously
wrong.

Which leads to my pet typo peeve: a word so mangled beyond recognition that
it would fail any known English language spell checker. Which means that
spell check was not invoked! What is wrong with you people who do not spell
check by default? The main 'cost' I can envision is having to okay words
that are not in your checker's dictionary, all of which I've ever
encountered allow you to add your own entries if you choose. (Notice I
dodged 'chose'.) The other cost is inadvertent replacement of a valid but
unrecognized word by another that makes no sense or veers off the path into
the jungle. Such as a recent note where 'tongue' somehow devolved into
'thong'. In this case the distribution list was amused more than confused.

So if you're a guilty party, please set aside an hour or two to find the
spell-check-by-default button in your email application and resolve to live
a few minor inconveniences for the sake of your own reputation. Some
misteaks can really maek you look like a dork.

(My spell checker flagged a few expected words in this note but happened to
fix three others that were totally accidental.)
