Bob - I've given it a lot more thought since starting this thread, I can tell you that! I'm going to have to do some testing with DSNTYPE to see what the value is when no diretory blocks and no DSORG is specified, but I'm thinking it's my best bet. Although to keep it simple, I might just use the specific name for these large files. It' should be a fairly small & manageable filterlist of easily identifiable datasets. ddk
