Well, Steve, I'll buy the second one ... That functionality (or lack thereof) had been my pet peeve for years. If you search the history files of IBM-Main, you'll probably find a few rants of my own to that subject. I gave up harping on it, when I found out that a piece of vendor software available at my last shop, ProSMS (previously also known as STOP-X37), had an optional function which was able to intercept and eliminate all those needless (MOD,DELETE) - file recalls. Once enabled, this function saved countless hours waiting for operators to mount ML2 tapes, not to mention wear and tear on the operators' sneakers.
