There is a little qualification on that. If you are on z/OS v1.6 or v1.7 you need to apply some maintenance to be able to utilize the zIIP processor. For z/OS v1.6 it's FMID JBB77S9 and for v1.7 it's FMID JBB772S. We are on z/OS 1.7 with a target date of installing v1.9 of September. However, we want to start using the zIIP so we need to apply the maintenance to v1.7.
Another nice benefit of the maintenance is that it'll populate fields in the SMF records that will allow you to determine what current CPU usage on the GP engines is eligible for the zIIP whether or not you have the zIIP installed.
