BTW Ted, COMPAT mode went away in z/OS 1.3, not z/OS 1.2.
Since I went straight to 1.4, from 2.10, I couldn't recall exactly.

ISTR running COMPAT mode in z/OS 1.4 as well. But perhaps the "grey
cells" aren't working quite right.
