I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but there's a recent
performance wrinkle to Enterprise PL/I. Enterprise PL/I Version 3.7 now
supports the hardware decimal floating point instructions which debuted (in
microcode form) on the System z9 and graduated to full hardware
implementation in the System z10. So you could well see some interesting,
favorable performance improvements in mathematics with that compiler,
particularly on the z10. YMMV.

I'm working on a short paper on this subject which may or may not get
published, so it's on the brain.
