Thanks for the personal note of concern. Earthquakes make huge news, but if
you follow accounts of more mundane disasters like weather, weather, and
weather, you'll find that on balance a hefty wind creates a lot more chaos
and carnage than a modest tectonic stress relief.

Today's 'seismic event' was reported as high as 5.8, currently reduced to
5.4 with an epicenter about 10 - 15 miles east of my data center. Because
of the logarithmic nature of the Richter Scale, that difference of .4 is
very significant. We suffered no damage at all in the data center to any
platform, mainframe or otherwise. There were a few electricity disruptions
in our service area, limited and short lived. My favorite quote on the
event, heard widely on local radio and TV, captures the grist with tinge of
dark humor:

"People have forgotten, I think, what earthquakes feel like," said Kate
Hutton, a seismologist at Caltech. "So I think we should probably look at
it as an earthquake drill. ... It's a drill for the `Big One' that will be
coming some day."

Basically the first thing I thought this morning when I heard about the
earth quake was: Now, how did Skip and SCE do?

Didn't know about these gyro plates. And slept through the only minor earth
quake in the Frankfurt area, too!
