I don't think this was ever a requirement. You needed to allocate a "PATTERN DSCB" with the GDG base name (everything but the GnnnnV00). This had to be on the same volume as the catalog the GDG was in. This was used to get the default DCB info. It could be avoided by specifying the DSCB keyword in the DD card that created the GDS.
