I would tend to agree, this would not qualify as 'bare metal'. I would hazard a guess that VMWare is not interested in writing operating systems so they borrowed one.
Just to be perfectly clear, they provide the Linux with the ESX and ESXi products. The customer is not required to acquire it as a prereq.
