My mantra is "machines should be self-documenting" and in that vein I perceive value in RMF "learning" how to get things like:
Installed Memory and how much of that is purchased.
HSA Size (and yes I know it's fixed 16GB on z10)
How much memory each LPAR has reserved.

Couldn't agree more about self documenting! I'd like to extend that to include all of the installed hardware features - CPs, Memory, IO cages, STIs PCHIDs, crypto etc etc.
For supported machines you can view the things above on ResourceLink. It's easier than walking to server room. <g>

Maybe it's not that big a deal if you have one small z10BC with a couple of CPs and a handful of Ficon, it probably doesn't change that much and any config work will be quite minor. But like you and others I get to do hardware config type work at some of the big sites and when you have 8 or 10 footprints on the floor it's not unusual to see nearly 1000 Ficon and 250 CF pchids installed. Documenting that becomes a huge task.. never mind planning machine upgrades..
Not necessarily. 1000 FICON connections sounds seriously, but in fact it means 2000 connectors "clicks". It has to be done be some human - hasn't it? So the only additional task for the human is to note cable number and port number. 2000 records. IMHO spreadsheet is sufficient as an application. Of course - if some installation has no such data, it would be nightmare to re-create it. However - *assuming your cables has unique id's* - it's not so hard to check and eliminate single documentation mistakes or "white spaces". Recipe:
1. Print the doco for relevant piece of HW (CPC, dasd box, switch)
2. Open cabinet doors and check each cable one by one against the printed documentation.
