Yes you can, and I have done so when I knew the length of the records I was looking at weren't going to be an issue. But it isn't a viable option for making a copy of all your SMF data - even if you weren't modifying anything in it.
Though the subject here was SCRT, which are SMF 89 records. Those should be okay.
