David, Thank you for responding. We do provide file level backup/restore using TSM running under Z/os.
The FDR backups are for volume backups only for DR. Recent problems restoring one of the Linux guests suggests to us that this might not be the best solution hence my questions. I personally would not go this route for the Linux guest, but would probably backup the VM system disk that way. This is why. To me, it makes more sense to make the platform as transparent as possible to the Unix admin, and developers. The other open platforms use a client server based backup tool like Tivoli Storage manager, or other vendor product. I would still go that route on system Z, so that the Unix team/developers can selectively restore data if needed just like they do on every other server they support. In your case, how would one, do this if your backups were with FDR? Now, you can still leverage the MF platform, if you want, by hosting the TSM server on z, and if your z boxes are attached to VTS, then you can even utilize HiperSockets to keep the backup network traffic off the wire. Since we are more familiar with the Z/os environment, we opted to backup our Linux volumes using FDR under Z/os. It appears that no procedure was ever put into place to bring down VM and Linux while the backups were being run. Our question(s) to the group is this: How do you backup your Linux volumes? Does VM need to be down while the backups are being run? Does anyone have a 7/24 requirement and how do you preform backups?
