"Engineering" means much more than to do with just engines.
It is a discipline to do with the application of scientific and mathematical 
principles to practical ends such as the design, manufacture, and operation of 
efficient and economical structures, machines, processes, and systems.

"Engineering", the discipline, was around long before "engines" were.
An example is Imhotep, the ancient Egyptian scientist and architect of the step 
pyramid.
