Wow, look at all the great replies from Listers! I've had a widget that does this, for some time now, but I don't know if it's appropriate to post to the list at this point, with so many other great responses. Mine is a REXX-called-from-JCL approach, similar to one of the suggestions, and mostly used to break up syslog datasets into smaller more manageable parts for problem analysis. Guess I was late to this party. Good inputs by all, though! =)
