Gray, The GRS ring has to have CTC connections between all LPARs that you want to share data. The more LPARs in the ring, the worse performance gets. At one site, we had 8 LPARs (6 were in a single sysplex). It was managable for our needs. As for sharing tape, I prefer the IBM product ATAM. Communicates between LPARs with TCPIP. Drives are offline to LPARs until needed. Still need GRS or MIM to protect data enqueues. Contact me offline if you want more details on how this was handled.
