If I retired right now, I would be able to work part time until our mainframe was gone, and then I would be out of a job.
So I am training in our new system, expecting that when the mainframe goes away, I can continue working full time. I don't know enough to have any idea whether I could retire and come back part time in 2-3 years. I don't see any evidence that IBM was even considered for our Oracle based replacement system. (Not counting Sun/IBM). I wonder how much IBM is planning for people to upgrade Suns to X-nix mainframes.
