What parameter did you use - Markfull or Reuse? If for some reason you feel you
need to use Markfull, then you need to recycle on a regular basis to avoid
running out of available output volumes.

SETSYS -
   PARTIALTAPE(BACKUP(REUSE) -
   MIGRATION(REUSE))

Subject: Using HSM DASD backup volumes

Hi folks

I've been trying to get HSM to backup to DASD daily backup volumes in a large
pool on our SAN. The benefit is that we get instant remote replication to the
DR site over Global Mirror, instead of messing around with replicating virtual
tape images and keeping those in sync, which has taken our DR recovery window
down from four hours to around 30 minutes.

However, HSM really doesn't seem to be very good at doing it this way and I'm
on the verge of junking the whole lot in favour of a batch solution based
around full/incrementals using ADRDSSU or, if I can get budget approval,
FDR/ABR.

Has anyone got any experience, opinions or solutions using HSM DASD backup
volumes, especially about any of the following:

- it takes much, much longer to run than using tape (around 3-4 hours instead
of 45-50 minutes), which surprises me as I thought it would be quicker (my SAN
DASD is attached by FICON and my virual tape is ESCON)
- the SPILL volumes are all marked as FULL in LIST BVOL, but most of them are
99% empty
- one LPAR still writes about half of the backups to tape, even though I have
gone through all the SETSYS parameters meticulously, and they're identical to
those on an LPAR which does not write any to tape

The discovery this week that the backup tasks were suspended whilst "WAITING
FOR A SPILL VOLUME' and me subsequently finding that they're all marked FULL,
is the final straw, I think. It's starting to be more trouble than it's worth.

Any advice gratefully received.

Brian
