Neither. It is a logical "vary" operation. I'm being vague because you didn't say whether they were for CP's use (EDEVICEs) or Linux. If these are CP-managed EDEVICEs, then when you VARY ON the subchannel (or if covered by Online_At_IPL in SYSTEM CONFIG), the virtual WWPN will light up. If they are Linux's use, then they come online when you do the Linux equivalent of a "vary".
