i do not know of a way to do what you are asking (bypass updating the AIX) - but ...
how bout adding a 1-byte field to the file (alt--key-known) when the AIX key is not known - radomize it - and move "N" to the one-byte field - else use the real AIX-key value and move "Y" to the new field there are most likely at least 100 things wrong with my suggestion - but it MIGHT work ...
