We are moving from a Shark with no PAV's to a EMC SAN with PAV's. We are going to use 3390-27's. I have read most of the archives on 3390-27's but I did not see anything on running your sysres or system data sets from a 27? We are thinking about going totally with 3390-27's, which means we must run with the sysres, jes checkpoint and spool, catalogues, RACF database, etc on the 27's. Is anyone doing that? What do we need to watch out for?

1. Yes, someone is doing that.
2. Be careful about the size of your "mod-27". This term describes any volume larger than 3390-9. More precisely it is something between 10017 and 32760 cylinders. In fact it is important to know what the # of cyls is actually. Of course it is great idea to have all the volume identical... 3. Check your system capabilities. Systems older than z/OS 1.7 did not have LARGE PS files, that means i.e. JES2 spool was limited to 64k tracks per volume. 4. Even if your software don't like big volumes (some older Adabas didn't) you can still use mode-27, but the files should be allocated on first cylinders. The rest of volume can be used for something non-fragile. 5. Some system datasets like couple datasets, JES checkpoints, page should be isolated at volume level. It could mean waste of space. I would stay with small volumes dedicated for those datasets. Why don't you create some mod-1's on your EMC?
