I guess you guys never have to support a customer whose system doesn't even include TCP/IP, let alone anything modern.

The stupid thing is to conserve the ancient architecture. I'm aware it's often choice of management, not technical staff. When we talk about mainframe A.D. 2009 we simply don't have such problems! Think about EAV or NFS attached USB. 3390-3 is history, as Bus&Tag, punched cards or other Dodo's.
