Upgrade is a fiction, which is offered purely for accounting (taxes,
leasing) purposes. IBM could set any s/n for any machine - this is not
technical issue.
There is almost no part that can be moved from older machine to newer
one (except the cards). You mentioned the frame - the frame is
*different*, so has to be replaced. And it's being replaced during
"upgrade". BTDT.
Last but not least: Whole "upgrade" process is absolutely unrelated to
any kind of ALS aspect, instruction sets, etc.
