Eric, The answer is "it depends." At one time, we asked for pricing on upgrading our 2086-260 to a 2086-270 (microcode upgrade) versus replacing our mainframe with a z9 BC. The estimates we got from the IBM business partner was that it would cost about 50% more to do the microcode upgrade than to bring in a new box.
