Ron,

The DS6000 is a slightly different animal from the EMC/HDS/IBM DS8000 boxes.
I've used all the above except the DS8000. The EMC and HDS boxes all have the
pizza boxes or laptops built within the frame of the DASD and is supported by
the vendor. The DS6000 was considered by IBM to be more of a midrange array
similar to the EMC Clariion (I had 1 of them too - try loading the config
software for a Clariion, XP512, and DS6800 all on the same PC - uh, no, don't
try it, I did and it ain't pretty). The DS6000 SE/console where the DS6000
configuration code is loaded is a customer provided external box running some
flavor of Windows.

I don’t remember what the HDS name of our first HDS box was (relabeled HP
XP512), but we purchased a separate pizza box to front end the SVP that was
internal in the XP512. The DS6800 could roughly compare to the HDS/XP512 where
the customer had no access to the SVP, and the SVP didn't have any kind of user
interface that was accessible by mere mortals. :-)

Karl,

You may be surprised to know that configs on at least two other DASD brands are
also loaded from a laptop. For HDS the SVP (Service Processor=Service Element)
is FRU that you can order. Has anyone tried to simply order and install a new
SE from IBM?

As for storing configs MF host storage, are you suggesting that IBM should
accommodate EMC and HDS configurations on the z10? And what would a
non-mainframe shop do for storage?

Just rhetorical questions mate. If you've ever built configurations for twelve
or more storage controllers from scratch you would know why a laptop (and RDC)
are so convenient.
