OK, I'm reading the Redbooks on this. And I'm wondering something due to my hardware ignorance. I've noticed that doing a P.O.R. is rather time consuming, especially on my company's z9BC. I don't know what a P.O.R. actually does internally. One thing that I am fairly sure of is that it loads the IOCDS and perhaps the "millicode" from the SE. It needs to do this because HSA is essentially just a part of main memory. It has always seemed to me that the SE's are rather slow. But I don't know how long this loading takes. The zEC12, optionally, has SSD type memory available to it. If available, why not keep the HSA in it? Is the HSA written to any time other than P.O.R. or when the IOCDS is reloaded due to a dynamic IOCDS update? Would doing so have any effect on the P.O.R. time? Or am I once again trying to optimize something that is irrelevant?
I ask these things due to my curiosity and ignorance. The last time, about IPL'ing from SSD memory, gained me good information about how fast IPL/NIP actually was compared to the rest of z/OS initialization. Too bad there is not some way to have an more completely "initialized" z/OS in the Flash Express (like CMS is kept in an NSS in z/VM) and be able to IPL from it. Yes, I know. We IPL way too often.
