WAS runs servlets and its kin - server side java. Applets are client-side 
java (and largely giggled at*). :-)


* Actually cursed at on occasion in my case as our expenses system relies 
on them. :-)

I know very little about IE8 and less about WAS. But, IIRC, WAS is a Java 
Application Server. Perhaps it serves up client Java applets? Is IE8 set 
up with Java enabled?
