What kind of recovery do you want to perform?
Even IPL-able USB stick containing whole system and applications and
data is not a complete solution. What about IOCDS?
Note: z/OS cannot be booted from neither USB stick, nor DVD, nor tape.
Period. It is possible to boot standalone program from DVD or tape, or
(maybe) USB stick. That's how COD ("driver") works: you can start
standalone program from DVD and restore 3390 images from DVD.
I would prefer to have "not so standalone" z/OS image on few "already
restored" 3390 volumes - it solves 90% possible problems. Remaining 10%
consist of 99% - disaster (standalone program is unusable) and 1% some
weird cases. ;-)
