This person didn't say it was his property. He said that he wouldn't give his knowledge away for free. In other words, he would rather take it to the coffin than participate in any sort of joint effort to collect information from (my words) "the old timers."
I would have zero problem with taking information from lists, rewording it, and putting it in a wiki.
