We use tapes quite a bit. We use 3592 carts for off-site storage. We use virtual 3490 for use in batch jobs for in-house backups. We have OpenTech's (now Rocket Software's) TapeCopy for data on virtual 3490 which needs to be off site for recovery. We considered using "TMM" to convert from virtual 3490 to real disk. But "it was too much bother" for the programmers. They are simply incapable of properly sizing (SPACE=) their data sets. We had to set up SMS so that the DATACLAS has a DVC of 59, effectively allowing them to have "unlimited" space for disk resident data sets. We still get complaints about PDSes because they cannot span multiple volumes and are limited to 16 extents. Like many here, the programmers don't like PDSEs very much. I don't know why. And don't mention UNIX to them. "Deer in headlights" looks from them. They can't grasp why the path separator in UNIX is / rather that the universal standard of \ like Windows. Or why they must put the UNIX file names in 'quotes' and not "quotes". And why 'file.ext' is not the same as 'FILE.EXT' like in Windows. It's just way too much trouble. And lower case is a tool of the Devil anyway.
