and I think this should be conceded.

What is not so clear is that this is not a defect rather than a merit.

Long ago, I remember being regaled over and over again with statements
that adversely compared the great simplicity of a FORTRAN compilation
under UNIVAC's EXEC 8 with the 'gratuitous' complexity of this same
operation under OS/360.

I investigated and found that it was indeed much easier to compile a
FORTRAN program under EXEC 8; but a price had to be and was paid for
this simplicity.  It was hard to do much of anything else.
