Its not a problem building C and assembler source into a regular load module with make; you just have to put your source in a z/OS Unix directory. There is also a port of gmake available; some Posix FOSS software won't build with the z/OS make. One point about conservatism. We do not have 'make' on the mainframe, so instead of conservatively and manually creating the INCLUDE list for the binder, I'd automated the process by asking the binder what does it miss and resolving it for next time. Pretty conservative, indeed!
