There are two issues that I tried to disentangle and which Charles appears to be confounding, at least in part.
One, the less interesting, is that of what constitutes the act of formally copyrighting something, what, minimally, one must to to copyright something. The other is that of what it is prudent to do if one wishes to avoid extended litigation of the sort that only a few very large entities can afford (and the outcomes of which even the ablest lawyers have some difficulty predicting). It is in this context that attempting to protect oneself in minimalist fashion is unwise.
