No, larger VTOC would cause response problems, but it was the issue in
the old times of non-indexed VTOC. Nowadays large VTOC means only few
tracks lost for VTOC.
The only advandage of having large VTOC is your good night's sleep -
that mean avoided problems due to no room in VTOC. It usually take place
according to Murphy's law.
For example I am adding 3390-9 volumes (10,017 cyls per volume) to a
STORAGE GROUP which will only alloc certain dsns which are equal or
larger than 1,500 cylinders.
My rule of thumb for 3390-9: VTOC(0,1,149). And I don't care about
volume content, because current usage could change in the future.
Of course very (very) rare exceptions could apply, i.e. PAGE or SPOOL
volumes, or so.
