on both Linux and Windows. But, unlike SAS on Linux/Windows, it cannot
direct read z/OS data via ftp, as best as I can see.

A very quick read suggests "R" is extendible via packages that can be
implemented in other languages (C, C++,...). I guess an interesting
question would be whether R provides in some form enough of the
features that are in SAS that it would be practical for Barry to port a
version of MXG to "R" so that it could process SMF records under Linux
and R.
