The path is only needed while the SSCH is active (i.e. actual I/O is being done). During this time, z/OS will not take the path offline. It will mark the path as pending offline and not use it for future I/O. Once the I/O is complete, it will actually take the path offline. So, you should not need to worry. z/OS is a bit smarter than some of the other systems out their (*cough* Windows *cough*).
