Don't know about Windows 7, but on Windows XP Pro, the directory
c:\JohnMcKown is identically the same as c:\johnMckOWn. That is, WinXP is
case preserving, but not case sensitive. Linux is both case preserving and
case sensitive. E.g. file ~/MyFile is not the same as ~/myFile as it is in
XP. I think MacOSX is like Windows in that respect, but I could be wrong.
Windows behavior is older than ...Windows. Reaaly - Windows followed
after OS/2. Note: in the very old days there were "graphical
environment", DOS overlay - MS Windows (naming convention 8.3 as in DOS)
and OS/2. OS/2 on HPFS volumes allowed longer names and case
preservation. Then Windows NT arrived... and a little bit later Win95...
BTW: My argument against Unix behavior: I cannot distinguish MyFiLE and
MYfiLe during phone call. Even spelling is simpler for M-y-f-I-L-e than
for "Upper M - Upper Y...".
BTW: I liked VMS system filenames - it was FILE.EXTENSION;VERSION mask
for "all files" is *.*;*
or [...]*.*;* - all files in this directory and all subdirectories
recursively.
