with regard to offline email regarding page replacement algorithms When I was starting work on paging stuff as undergraduate circa 1968, there was CACM article on "Local LRU" page replacement ... about the same time I was doing "Global LRU" page replacement In the 80s, a co-worker of Jim Gray at Tandem was getting a Stanford PHD that involved global LRU page replacement ... and was strongly opposed by the local LRU forces. Jim was aware that I had done a lot with global LRU as undergraduate in the 60s (about the same time as the local LRU CACM paper) ... and actually had nearly direct "local LRU" comparison to "global LRU" ... and wanted me to step in to the argument on behalf of "global LRU" PHD (the direct "global LRU" comparison numbers were significant better than "local LRU"). Unfortunately this was in the era that I was being blamed for computer conferencing on the internal network ... and it took nearly a year to get IBM management approval to send the responses (even tho the response was about work before I was an employee ... while still an undergraduate in the 60s). I was hoping this was because IBM management was punishing me for online computer conferencing and not because they were taking sides in the local/global LRU academic dustup (as an aside, advisor for this particular PHD went on to be president of stanford univ ... but was still having hard time prevailing against the "local LRU" forces). past post http://www.garlic.com/~lynn/2006w.html#46 with copy of this response (nearly year after original request) http://www.garlic.com/~lynn/2006w.html#email821019 -- virtualization experience starting Jan1968, online at home since Mar1970 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [email protected] with the message: INFO IBM-MAIN
