One person on the list even laughed at me when I mentioned IBM’s 99999 uptime
goal.

I remember a customer coming to tell IBM that they had had CICS up for 3
years continuously providing a service with no down time.  "So what, people
do this all the time" he said.
"But for us, we have upgraded CICS, DB2, and z/OS to new versions.  We
have moved machine rooms (twice) and upgraded the hardware."
Our recent computer science grads were amazed at this, having been used to
rebooting at least once a week. They were gobsmacked - having thought a
failover and restart within a minute on other platforms was pretty cool.
We get so used to the z/OS levels of availability we forget others do not
know about it.
