Uh, I was talking about a small zBox being used to do nothing but
compiles. Not a non-zArch platform. I know of a company that
provides this service. You off-load your compiles to them which
takes MSU burn off your system to their box -- can cut your cost
of compiles.
Especially if you take COBOL 6.x off-prem to such a box, since it
EATS MSUs. Or so it has in my experience.

I've actually been a part of a project that did just that. tons

offload MF processes to a grid like solution, tons of $$$ spent

Problem is, if one is doing cloud compiling off-prem, then one
must do external translate for compilers.

I might add to the existing comments that the internal SQL

Some of the new COBOL 6 language features are not supported
by the external translator, COBOL's TRUE/FALSE for example
will grind the external translator to a halt. More COBOL
changes are coming that will not be supported.
Watch our for bad coding practices because the COBOL 6
compiler will enforce rules. Zero subscripts are treated as
a value 1 in COBOL 4, but fail in COBOL 6. Of course these
have always been the "rules", its just that the IBM compilers
did not enforce them.
